Chapter 12

THE COFFEE SHOP DETOUR

Radhika stirred as she awoke, but kept her eyes closed. She breathed in deeply. The air was filled with the delicious smell of fried eggs. She sighed contently. Waking up in the morning was fast becoming one of her favorite moments of the day because it was an indication that she was out of the Challenge.

She stretched and sat up on her bed.

The house was quiet except for the intermittent banging of pots and pans in the kitchen.

Radhika suddenly froze mid-yawn.

The house was almost too quiet...

She scrambled up, nearly tripping on her comforter as she dashed towards her door, yanked it open and bounded down the stairs and towards Aarav’s door.

She hesitated before knocking softly.

“YEAH I’M BACK!” Her heart leapt as the familiar sleepy voice barked from within the room.

Radhika grinned and turned around as their aunt arrived at the landing downstairs and peered up. “What’s with the racket? What does he mean he’s back? Did he slip out again last night?”

“Oh no, Mausi. I think what he meant was that he’s up.”

She grinned awkwardly. “The eggs smell yummy!” she added and then made her way back to her room.

Shruti watched Radhika’s retreating back with worry. Then she hurried into the kitchen as the smell of burnt eggs filled the air.

Meanwhile, Radhika had arrived back in her bedroom. She opened her wardrobe and sifted through the clutter in search of the red turtleneck sweater her aunt had bought for her last week. It was nowhere to be found although she clearly remembered seeing it here yesterday.

Oh well, she’ll wear something else, and look for the turtleneck in the evening. She got dressed and headed back downstairs, glancing at the hall clock as she strode towards the kitchen. It was half past six in the morning. She had plenty of time for school.

“Did you happen to see my red turtleneck anywhere?” She asked Shruti as she walked into the kitchen.

“The one I got you last week?”

“Yeah.”

“No, I just finished a load of laundry and it's not in there.”

Radhika frowned.

“It must be somewhere in your room, beta. You can look for it in the evening.”

“Yeah...”

Shruti placed a plate of fried eggs and toast in front of her. Aarav sauntered in, yawning widely.

“I got up early and thought you guys might enjoy a break from cereal today. So I fried some eggs. It got a little burnt, so scrape off any dark bits that I didn’t manage to get off. And um - don’t eat it if it tastes funny,” apologized Shruti.

“I think it tastes yummy,” Radhika replied as Aarav made a face at her. Her aunt beamed.

“You are both early today,” Shruti said as she slid a plate of eggs and toast towards Aarav and then took the chair opposite him.

Aarav was oblivious to his aunt as he started gobbling down the eggs hurriedly.

“Slow down! You have a lot of time until your bus arrives,” Shruti said.

“I know. I want to watch –”

“Nope. No television for you.”

Aarav looked up from his eggs, dismayed.
